Online Advanced Placement Course Information

Frederick County Virtual School offers College Board Accredited Online Advanced Placement Courses through the Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities (MVLO). This is a Division of the Maryland State Department of Education. Most courses are one credit, two semester, 36 week courses that run from September 1 through May 1. Students are expected to work at least 2 hours a night four nights a week.

All FCPS students who wish to take an online course must take the Student Online Proficiency Assessment in order to qualify for the online instructional model.

Students who wish to take the AP Exam at the end of the course must register and take the exam in their home school during the first weeks in May.

The funding for this program is limited, so preference will be given to students who:

  • are seniors
  • register for courses not available in their school
  • register for courses for which they have a schedule conflict

Registration will take place online beginning July 1.. There will be a required face-to-face orientation at the Walkersville building fro 6:00 to 7:00 pm one week before the beginning of classes.

For more information on registration see your guidance counselor and call Buddy Phillips @ 240-236-8425

  Information on the AP Audit

The College Board created the AP Course Audit to “provide teachers and administrators with clear guidelines on curricular and resource requirements that must be in place for AP courses.  An overview Power Point is available at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/ap_course_audit_pp_final.v2.rev.ppt#671,1,The AP® Course Audit: Overview

MVLO submitted its online courses and were authorized to offer them with the “AP” designation for the 07-08 year.  MVLO/MSDE has received authorization that the following courses are renewed for the 08-09 year. Students and schools that complete the authorized AP course(s) through MVLO are able to use the “AP” designation on their 2008-09 transcripts.

However, the College Board has implemented standards for AP science courses and alternate approaches to the hands-on lab requirement that impact Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.  The College Board states, “AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses can only be labeled "AP" if they include a laboratory component. If the online or distance learning course does not have an approved virtual or hands-on lab component, those courses will not be approved . All hands-on labs require the presence of a science educator to supervise the students during their laboratory work.”  More information regarding the requirements is available at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/courses/teachers_corner/51274.html#nameHands#nameHands

The MVLO science courses for 08-09 are approved with the following lab components:

Course

Approved Lab Component

Biology

Virtual or Hands-On

Chemistry

Virtual or Hands-On

Physics

Hands-On only

For students enrolling in Physics B, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, and Physics C: Mechanics for 08-09, the hands-on labs will require the presence of a science educator to supervise students during their laboratory work.  MVS coordinators should begin the planning process now to ensure that resources are available to meet this requirement for fall and spring enrollments.
